The Perfect Wedding Morning: How to Schedule Hair, Makeup, and Memorable “Getting Ready” Photos

Your wedding morning sets the tone for your entire day. It’s the time where the nerves start to flutter, emotions rise, and the anticipation builds. It’s also when some of the most heartfelt and beautiful photos are captured—the quiet moments, the happy tears, the laughter with your bridesmaids, and the final touches before you walk down the aisle.

As your photographer, I love being part of this part of your story. To make the most of it (and keep it stress-free!), here’s a guide to help you plan the morning of your wedding, especially how to time your hair and makeup, what to prepare for photos, and a few tips to keep everything running smoothly.

Timing Your Morning: A Sample Getting Ready Schedule

Below is a sample timeline you can customize with your beauty team and planner. You’ll want to have your hair and makeup team provide an exact schedule, but here’s a general idea to work from:

SAMPLE TIMELINE (BASED ON A 3:00 PM CEREMONY)

  • 8:00 AM – Hair and makeup begins
  • 11:00 AM – Photographer arrives & detail shots
  • 12:00 AM – Final makeup touches begin (perfect for photos!)
  • 12:15 AM – Bride writes vows / opens gift from groom
  • 12:30 AM – Bridesmaids photos in robes / matching PJs
  • 1:00 AM – Mom/sister/best friend gets bride into dress
  • 1:15 PM – Final touches (jewelry, shoes, veil, perfume)
  • 1:30 AM – First look with Groom
  • 1:45 PM – Bride and Groom with wedding party
  • 2:00 PM – Family Portraits
  • 2:30 PM – Tuck away couple and get ready for ceremony
  • 3:00 PM – Ceremony

Keep in mind, every wedding is different—but building a buffer is key to staying relaxed and on time.

What Happens When I Arrive: Capturing the Details

When I arrive, the first thing I do is photograph your beautiful details. This part takes around 40 minutes and includes:

  • A styled flat lay of your invitation suite, rings, vow books, etc.
  • Your wedding dress (preferably hanging in great light)
  • Shoes, jewelry, perfume, veil, and any meaningful heirlooms
  • Your bouquet (be sure it's delivered early enough!)

Pro Tip: Check out this blog post I wrote on wedding flat lays and details for how to prep everything for me in advance!

Have all these items ready in one place when I arrive—preferably near a window or spot with natural light.

Capturing the Final Makeup Moments

Once details are done, I love jumping in to capture the finishing touches of your makeup—a dab of blush, your lipstick being applied, a spritz of setting spray. These images feel so intimate and polished—they’re perfect for your album. If you're writing your vows that morning or reading a sweet card or gift from your partner, that’s also a perfect time to capture those emotional moments.

Getting Dressed & Those Memorable Moments

Once makeup is done and the glam is finished, it’s time to slip into your dress. Choose someone close to you—your mom, sister, best friend—to help you.

Tip: Whoever is helping you into your dress should be fully dressed and camera-ready before you are. This ensures they look polished in your photos, too!

This is also when we capture:

  • Putting on your earrings, necklace, or veil
  • Stepping into your shoes or slipping on gloves
  • A sweet moment with your parent(s) or bridal party

Fun, Candid Pre-Dress Photos

One of my favorite parts of the morning is taking fun, candid photos of you and your girls in your robes or matching PJs. These shots are relaxed, playful, and always full of laughter. Plan a toast with champagne, share a group hug, or pop on a playlist to set the vibe.

Keeping the Space Clean = Better Photos

Let’s talk about something not so glamorous, but super important: the room you're getting ready in.

Here’s how to make it photo-friendly:

  • Designate one corner or closet for everyone’s bags, clothes, and clutter.
  • Have a garment rack if possible for dresses—bonus if it’s near natural light.
  • Bring a steamer and keep it nearby for last-minute touch-ups.
  • Tidy as you go—ask a bridesmaid to help keep the space neat.

These little things make a huge difference in your photos and your peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

The morning of your wedding should feel calm, joyful, and full of love—not rushed or chaotic. With a little planning, we can make sure it runs smoothly and your photos reflect all the beauty and excitement of the day to come.

Remember, it’s not just about the pictures—it’s about how you felt in those moments. Let’s make them unforgettable.
