Meaningful Alternatives to a First Look With the Groom
The "first look" has become a popular wedding trend—and for good reason. It’s a beautiful, private moment between the bride and groom before the ceremony begins. But it’s not for everyone. Whether you're keeping things traditional and waiting to see each other at the altar, or you're just looking for other ways to create meaningful memories, there are plenty of alternatives to the classic first look that are just as emotional, intentional, and photo-worthy. Here are a few of my favorite first look alternatives that still create special, unforgettable moments—without seeing your partner before the ceremony.
1. Exchange Gifts or Letters Without Seeing Each Other
One of the sweetest ways to connect without breaking tradition is by exchanging letters or gifts before the ceremony. You can choose to open them privately or have a quiet moment near each other (but out of sight!) while reading them aloud.
This is such a special way to share your emotions, love, and excitement before the ceremony—and it makes for beautiful, tear-jerking photo moments.
💡 Tip: Want to add a personal touch? Read your letter aloud during a “first touch” (see below) for a deeper, more emotional moment.
2. Do a “First Touch” Instead of a First Look
A “first touch” allows you and your partner to be close—maybe standing back to back, holding hands around a door, or standing on either side of a corner—without actually seeing each other.
This is a perfect time to:
- Pray together
- Read your vows privately
- Share a few calming words before the big moment
- Exchange letters or small gifts
The first touch is deeply emotional, personal, and keeps that big reveal for the aisle while still connecting beforehand.
3. First Look With Your Dad (or Someone Special)
One of the most touching moments I’ve had the honor to photograph is a first look between a bride and her father. Whether it's your dad, stepdad, grandfather, or another special figure in your life, it’s a beautiful way to honor your relationship with them.
These moments are often full of raw emotion—tears, hugs, laughter—and make for timeless photos you’ll treasure forever.
💡 Tip: Let them wait outside while you get into your dress, then call them in when you're ready. The surprise is worth it every time!
4. First Look With Your Bridesmaids
A bridesmaid first look is such a fun and joyful way to build excitement on the morning of your wedding. After your hair, makeup, and dress are done, gather your girls outside the room, and have them turn around together for the big reveal!
It’s a high-energy moment filled with:
- Happy tears
- Excited squeals
- Hugs and hype
These reactions make for priceless photos—and they let your bridal party feel really part of your big day.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to do a first look with your groom to have meaningful, emotional, or unforgettable pre-ceremony moments. Whether it's a heartfelt first touch, a surprise gift, or a teary-eyed moment with your dad, there are so many ways to add connection and intention to your wedding day.
Whatever you choose, the key is to make it true to you. The most beautiful moments are the ones that feel personal, honest, and full of heart.
