Justin + Britt

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to shoot at Cathedral Rock. It is one of those locations that I think a lot of photographers long to add to their portfolio. Cathedral Rock is located just outside the beautiful and magical little town of Sedona, Arizona. It has captivated so many of us with its famous "Red Rock" landscape.  If you are considering taking your photos at Cathedral Rock in Sedona, here are some of my best tips:

First I want to mention that there are only 2 small parking lot areas at the trailhead for Cathedral Rock. You’ll need to purchase a Red Rocks pass which is $5 per day, there is a parking machine at the beginning of the trail head that you can use to purchase your pass. This a very popular trail so the parking lots fill up fast. I arrived about 30 mins early and camped out in the parking lot to grab someone's spot at they were leaving.

The hike up to the famous ledge is about a 1 mile long hike but it’s a steep climb. I highly recommend not wearing your session attire during the hike. I promise your clothes with be covered in red dirt. For Britt and Justin I brought along a sheet that we used to hide them as they change into their clothes at the top.

If you are taking photos around sunrise or sunset, you’ll likely be starting or ending in some amount of darkness, so the flash light or headlamp will be essential. I personally brought a headlamp and was so thankful that I did. I was able have both hands free to help me climb down when parts of the hike got particularly steep.

I hope you enjoyed these gallery pictures. I think Sedona is one of the most beautiful places in the USA, if not the world!
